History
1958 - Opening of the school. It is the first High School in Bulgaria that offers French language teaching and boarding-house. In the city of Varna it is called “The French High School”. Address: 32 Stefan Karadja St. Personnel: 239 students; 28 teachers and monitors, among them 3 French citizens appointed with a special contract.
1972 - Moving to a new building on Pochivka bus station. Opening of a Russian section. The school has a new official name: Fourth Bilingual High School with French and Russian language teaching. The boarding-house already only receives the students coming from other settlements.
1976 - Association with UNESCO.
1984 - A Spanish section is opened on the initiative of the school administration.
1990 - The Russian section and the boarding-house are closed.
The first Bilingual French language teaching High School in the country is founded on the 7th September 1958. The school council elects patron the world-wide famous French scientist Frederic Joliot-Curie - physicist, Nobel Prize winner and world peace activist.
At present, our language teaching High School has 64 teachers. Among them, 5 have 1st qualification degree; 20 have 2nd degree; 7- 3rd degree, 4 - 4th degree, and 8 - 5th degree. The high competence of the teachers is nationally and internationally acknowledged. Teachers of the school are authors of exercise books in the subjects studied in a foreign language, students’ books, as well as many articles in reputed pedagogical magazines and newspapers.
Nowadays, 50 years after its foundation, the IV Foreign Language High School consists of two sections. The French section admits 4 new classes every school year, and the Spanish one - 3. They have 784 students in total.
The IV language teaching High School is famous for its students’ success. In their four participations in the national French Language competition for Bilingual High Schools organized by the French-Bulgarian association, our French section students have won six prizes. For the 19 years of existence of the Spanish section, its students have won the first place in the national Spanish Language Olympics 12 times. During the school years 1999/2000, 2000/2001 and 2001/2002, eight students from our school qualified for the final round of the Bulgarian Language and Literature Olympics. The most successful students usually win prizes in national Mathematics competitions, in the national round of the Biology Olympics, and many others. Most of the graduates of the IV Bilingual High School continue their studies in Universities in Bulgaria or abroad. They are very appreciated for the high level of their knowledge and skills.
